The architecture diploma program takes a minimum of 10 semesters and concludes with the Austrian title Magister/Magistra architecturae (Mag. Arch.). The Diploma program is not equivalent to a postgraduale education. For information about the postgraduate programe of the Institute of Architecture, please visit www.urbanstrategies.at.
To apply you must submit your portfolio. Handing in your work automatically registers you for one of our entry exams. There are two entry exams a year, one in early July and one the week before the official start of the winter term. (See exact dates below). The results of the three day exam are announced at the end of the exam week. For more information, see our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and the following Application Steps:
APPLICATION STEPS
1. Which studio suits best? The Angewandte has three studios, led by Zaha Hadid, Wolf Prix and Greg Lynn. As you have to decide beforhand whcih studio you are registering for, please check out the webiste of each studio, their work and the Institute of Architecture (link below). In addition, have a look at the work of each of the professors. In addition, you can visit usa during the Open House Day that takes place on January 28th 10:00 - 19:00 and talk to students and teachers. It is also possible to come and watch presentations of the studio projects during Finals (for dates please check our news section). 2. Inform yourself about the Institute of Architecture and its publications The Insitute of Architecture (I-O-A) is publishing on a regular basis. The book 99+ has been recently publishe is available online. It shows selected works of all three studios in a condensed format. It provides a very good overview of how each studio works.
![]() 3. Make your Portfolio Every applicant needs to hand in a portfolio, a collection of works, that demonstrate your skills and motivation in any cultural/design field. It should preferrably be in one single book or folder in a maximum format of A2. Be aware to communicate a clear picture of your own skills, interests and motivation with your portfolio. Pick your best projects - it should not include more than 20 or 25 works. All works that have been created under supervision or in a team need to have correct credits for schools, teachers or team members. Please include a detailed CV and a photograph with the portfolio.
![]() 4. Sign up for entry exam and submit your portfolio Please hand in your portfolios personally or send them via mail during the given dates. With handing in your portfolio you are automatically registered for the entry exam. ![]() 5. Preparation: Sample tasks If you are curious to know what the tasks are like we ahve provided a small set of tasks that were part of recent exams. Make sure you read the task properly and work thoroughly instead of rushing. If you think your portfolio has not enough material we appeciate if you present the results in your portfolio.

Preparation: Material for the entry exam A significant part of the entry exam consists of drawing and model building (mostly paper and cardboard) Please bring all necessary tools like pens, rulers, scissors, paint, exacto knives etc... In general, we recommend to bring material and tools that you are used to work and feel comfortable with. For the tasks, we are providing paper and cardboard. If you own a digital camera it might make things a little easier if you bring it, but it is not required.
As the entry exam days could turn out to be long, please bring some food and drinks.
